How long is a WEC race?

Most WEC races last six hours. WEC Engine's archive holds 107 championship races; of the 106 it held after the 2026 Fuji round, 76 were scheduled as six-hour races. Le Mans runs for 24 hours, Bahrain and Portimão have hosted eight-hour races, Sebring has run a 12-hour race and the 1000 Miles, Qatar has run 1812 km, and two 2019 rounds lasted four hours. The 2027 calendar has five races billed as six hours, plus the Lone Star Le Mans in Texas, the Qatar 1812km, Le Mans and an eight-hour Bahrain.

Every race format in the archive

The six-hour race is the WEC standard. It has been the default format at Spa, Fuji, Silverstone, Shanghai, the Circuit of the Americas, São Paulo, Imola and most other venues since 2012.

Eleven races were scheduled for eight hours or 1000 miles. Seven were 8 Hours of Bahrain, held in December 2019, November 2020 and every season from 2021 to 2025. One was the 8 Hours of Portimão in 2021. Three were 1000 Miles of Sebring, in 2019, 2022 and 2023.

The Qatar 1812km opened the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The winning cars covered 335 and 318 laps of Lusail, with a summed lap time of roughly ten hours each.

Le Mans accounts for 14 of the races in the archive; the 2016 edition is missing. The single 12-hour race was the 2012 season opener at Sebring, shared with the American Le Mans Series, where the No. 2 Audi covered 325 laps. The two four-hour races both came in the 2019-20 season, at Silverstone and Shanghai.

How far the cars go

Distance tracks the clock and the circuit. Through the 2026 Fuji round, the highest lap count in a six-hour race in the archive was 249, set by the No. 14 Porsche 919 Hybrid at Interlagos in 2014. Short laps at São Paulo produce the biggest totals: the 2026 race ran to 242 laps.

At long circuits the numbers drop sharply. From 2012 to 2026, six hours at Spa produced between 103 and 176 laps for the winner, the low figure coming in the 2022 race.

Through the 2026 Fuji round, the most laps in any race outside Le Mans belonged to the 2024 Qatar 1812km, at 335. Among the eight-hour races, the 2021 Portimão winner covered 300 laps. At Le Mans, the 2015 race has the most laps of any edition in the archive, 395, and the rain-hit 2024 race the low of 311.

When a race stops early

The clock is a maximum, not a promise. The shortest race in the archive from 2012 to 2026 is the 2013 6 Hours of Fuji, where heavy rain limited the winning Toyota to 16 laps.

Fuji has been unlucky. The 2017 race also finished early in the wet, with the winning Toyota on 113 laps. A year earlier, the 2016 winner had covered 244 laps of the same circuit.

Le Mans has run its full 24 hours in every WEC-era edition in the archive. The weather shows up in distance instead, which is why 2024's 311 laps sit 84 short of 2015's record.

Why the lengths differ

The format sets the points. A longer race pays more in the championship, and Le Mans pays the most of all, as explained in the WEC scoring guide. That is why the calendar keeps a small number of long races alongside a six-hour core.

The 2027 calendar, published by the FIA WEC on 12 June 2026, keeps that shape. Imola, Silverstone, Spa, São Paulo and Fuji are billed as six-hour races, and the Lone Star Le Mans at the Circuit of the Americas was a six-hour race in each of its 2024 to 2026 editions. Qatar keeps its 1812 km distance, Le Mans its 24 hours and Bahrain its eight hours.

The last two rounds of 2026, at Barcelona on 18 October and Monza on 8 November, are six-hour races that replaced the cancelled Qatar and Bahrain rounds. That leaves Le Mans as the only 2026 race longer than six hours, as it was in every season from 2013 to 2017.

What is the longest WEC race that isn't Le Mans?

The longest WEC race outside the 24 Hours of Le Mans was the championship's first race, the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 2012, where the winning No. 2 Audi covered 325 laps. Since then the longest format has been the Qatar 1812km, which opened the 2024 and 2025 seasons and took the winners about ten hours each time. Next come the eight-hour races: the 8 Hours of Bahrain, the 2021 8 Hours of Portimão and the 1000 Miles of Sebring. Almost every other WEC race has lasted six hours or less.

How long is the Le Mans circuit?

The Circuit de la Sarthe measures 13.626 kilometres, about 8.47 miles, which makes it by far the longest track in the FIA WEC and one of the longest active race circuits in the world. A Hypercar pole lap takes around three minutes and 23 seconds; the race winners cover the distance around 380 times in 24 hours, more than 5,000 kilometres of racing. Most of that length is public road, closed once a year for the race.

How does the WEC scoring system work?

The WEC awards points to every classified finisher in each class, with the 24 Hours of Le Mans paying double points and the 8-hour and 1812 km rounds paying 1.5 times the standard scale. A class winner at a 6-hour race earns 25 points, at an 8-hour race 38 and at Le Mans 50. Hyperpole adds one championship point to the pole-sitter in each class. Drivers, teams and manufacturers each have their own championship table calculated from the same per-race results.

Who has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the WEC era?

Since the FIA WEC began in 2012, only four manufacturers have won the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright: Audi (2012 to 2014), Porsche (2015 to 2017), Toyota (2018 to 2022, plus 2026) and Ferrari (2023 to 2025). Fifteen editions from 2012 to 2026, four badges, and three distinct dynasties broken only by the swing years between eras. The full year-by-year list, with crews and race distance, is below.
