How many races are in a WEC season?

A WEC season usually has eight races. The 2026 calendar has eight rounds, with results for 7 of them in the archive so far, and the 2027 calendar grows to nine, the first nine-round season since 2017. From 2012 to the 2026 Barcelona round, WEC Engine's archive holds 107 completed races, with full-season totals ranging from six races in 2021 and 2022 to nine in 2016 and 2017.

The season-by-season count

The first four seasons, 2012 to 2015, each ran eight races. The calendar peaked at nine rounds in 2016 and 2017. The archive holds eight of the nine 2016 races because the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans has not yet been ingested.

Then came two long seasons. The 2018-19 super season ran eight races between May 2018 and June 2019 and included two editions of Le Mans. The 2019-20 season also ran eight races, from Silverstone in September 2019 to Bahrain in November 2020, with Le Mans moved to September 2020.

The 2021 and 2022 seasons each had six races, the shortest calendars from 2012 to 2026. The count rose to seven in 2023 and returned to eight in 2024 and 2025. The 2026 calendar also has eight rounds.

Every WEC championship race since Sebring in March 2012 is in the archive except the 2016 Le Mans, which leaves 107 races with results.

What counts as a round

The Prologue is not a race. The archive stores eight pre-season tests from 2013 to 2021 as events with no race session, from Paul Ricard in 2013 to Spa in 2021. None of them scored points.

Le Mans counts once per season, except in 2018-19 when the super season covered two editions. The 2021 calendar ran two races in Bahrain on consecutive weekends, a six-hour race followed by an eight-hour race, which is why the archive stores them as separate events.

The count also depends on the class. LMP2 left the full-season WEC grid after 2023. Since 2024, every LMP2 entry in the archive has come at Le Mans: 16 cars in 2024, 17 in 2025 and 19 in 2026. For an LMP2 team, the WEC season is now one race.

Why 2026 kept eight races after two cancellations

The 2026 schedule was built around a Qatar opener and a Bahrain finale. The Qatar race was first moved to October, then cancelled together with Bahrain. On 28 July 2026 the FIA WEC confirmed six-hour races at Barcelona and Monza as replacements, citing regional developments affecting freight and travel.

That keeps the season at eight rounds. The first six were Imola, Spa, Le Mans, São Paulo, the Circuit of the Americas and Fuji. The calendar puts Barcelona on 18 October and the Monza finale on 8 November, according to the official 2026 season page.

The nine-round 2027 calendar

The 2027 calendar published by the FIA WEC on 12 June 2026 has nine rounds. It opens with the Qatar 1812km on 25-27 March after the Prologue at the same circuit, and closes with the 8 Hours of Bahrain on 4-6 November.

The extra round is Silverstone, back after an eight-year absence. Silverstone hosted eight WEC races between 2012 and 2019, the last of them a four-hour race in September 2019. The other eight 2027 venues are the circuits of the current era: Qatar, Imola, Spa, Le Mans, São Paulo, the Circuit of the Americas, Fuji and Bahrain.

A nine-race 2027 would be only the third nine-round season in the championship's 15 seasons, after 2016 and 2017. It also restores both Middle East rounds that the 2026 calendar lost.

Which circuit has hosted the most WEC events?

Spa-Francorchamps has hosted the most WEC races in WEC Engine's archive, with 15. Le Mans has 14 races in the archive, which leaves out the 2016 24 Hours, a WEC round that has not been ingested. Counting that race, Le Mans has hosted one more WEC race than the archive shows. Bahrain has 14, including two races in 2021, and Fuji 13. Spa and Le Mans are the only circuits that hosted a WEC race in every season from 2012 to 2026.

Regulations

What is the WEC Prologue?

The Prologue is the FIA WEC's official pre-season test: two days in which every full-season entry runs on the same track, usually the venue of the opening round, in the week before the season starts. It is mandatory for the field, open to spectators at most editions, and it is the first time each year that new cars, new liveries and new driver line-ups run in public with the timing screens on.

Events

What is the longest WEC race that isn't Le Mans?

The longest WEC race outside the 24 Hours of Le Mans was the championship's first race, the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 2012, where the winning No. 2 Audi covered 325 laps. Since then the longest format has been the Qatar 1812km, which opened the 2024 and 2025 seasons and took the winners about ten hours each time. Next come the eight-hour races: the 8 Hours of Bahrain, the 2021 8 Hours of Portimão and the 1000 Miles of Sebring. Almost every other WEC race has lasted six hours or less.

Why doesn't the WEC race at Silverstone anymore?

The WEC last raced at Silverstone in September 2019 and has not returned since. The 6 Hours of Silverstone hosted 8 WEC rounds between 2012 and 2019, making it the championship's longest-running British venue. The 2019 race produced one of the WEC's most controversial results when both Toyota TS050 Hybrids were stripped of their finishing positions in a post-race technical inspection, handing the win to a Rebellion Racing privateer that had finished a lap down. The fixture was dropped from the 2020 calendar and never reinstated.
